Pictured here in the centre alongside two fellow Surgery Now patients who travelled for surgery at the same time, and our patient driver Scott, Finbarr’s journey is a great example of how the Cross Border Directive is helping Irish patients access treatment without lengthy delays.
After spending a year and a half on a waiting list for knee surgery in Ireland, Finbarr knew he couldn’t continue waiting for the treatment he needed.
Following a recommendation from his local GP, Finbarr began exploring the Cross Border Directive and reached out to Surgery Now to learn more about his options.
From the very beginning, the process gave him confidence that he was making the right decision.
After making initial contact with our team, an online video meet was arranged with his surgeon to discuss his condition and whether surgery in Spain would be suitable. This video meet gave Finbarr the chance to ask questions, understand the procedure, and feel reassured about moving forward.
Throughout the journey, the Surgery Now team was on hand to provide support every step of the way.
“ Any and all questions, no matter how trivial, were answered promptly,” Finbarr explained.
Travel arrangements and accommodation were organised in advance, helping to make the experience as straightforward and stress-free as possible.
During his stay, Finbarr was accommodated at Hotel AJ, where he found everything he needed close by.
“ The room was clean and comfortable with a balcony to sit out on. The hotel had its own restaurant, and there were several other restaurants, supermarkets, a pharmacy, and coffee shops all within walking distance.”
Transport to and from appointments was carefully coordinated, ensuring everything ran smoothly throughout his stay.
“ Pick-up and drop-off times from the airport and appointments were all organised well in advance, and if there were any changes, you were well advised.”
Finbarr also praised Scott, who provided transport and support during his time in Spain.
“ Scott, who drove us to our appointments, was very helpful and knowledgeable and able to put you at ease.”
When it came to his treatment, Finbarr could not speak highly enough of the care he received.
“ The hospital and staff were first class.”
Like many patients using the Cross Border Directive, Finbarr paid for his treatment upfront before claiming reimbursement through the scheme. While flights and accommodation are separate expenses, he felt the quality of care and speed of access made the experience worthwhile.
“ Yes, you must pay upfront and wait about 12 weeks before being reimbursed. The only costs outside of surgery that aren’t covered are flights and accommodation, but that’s a small price to pay for a first-class service.”
Reflecting on his experience, Finbarr says he would happily recommend Surgery Now to others who are currently waiting for treatment in Ireland.
“ I would definitely recommend Surgery Now to anyone in Ireland on a waiting list for surgery. Thanks to the Surgery Now team, I’m on the road to recovery.”
At Surgery Now, we understand the frustration of long waiting lists and the impact they can have on everyday life. We are proud to have helped Finbarr access the treatment he needed and wish him continued success as he moves forward on his recovery journey.
