If you’re thinking about bariatric surgery, chances are you’ve already done a fair bit of research.
You might have searched online, read about the different procedures, joined a Facebook group or spent time wondering whether surgery could actually be an option for you.
But even with so much information available, there are still questions that people can feel a little uncomfortable asking.
Will surgery really be right for me? What will my family think? What if I’m nervous about travelling? And how does the whole process actually work?
These are questions we hear regularly, so this month we wanted to talk about some of them.
“ Could bariatric surgery be right for me? ”
This is often one of the first questions people have.
If you’ve struggled with your weight for a long time, you may have thought about surgery but still be unsure whether it’s something you should consider.
There isn’t a simple yes or no answer. Everyone is different, and whether bariatric surgery may be suitable depends on things such as your BMI, your health and your individual circumstances.
There are also certain criteria that need to be met if you are looking at treatment through the EU Cross Border Directive.
If you’re unsure, that’s okay. Your first step doesn’t have to be making a decision. It can simply be having a conversation, asking questions and finding out more about what your options could be.
“ What if I’ve tried everything before? ”
This is something we hear a lot.
Many people who come to us have spent years trying different diets, exercise plans and weight-loss programmes. Some have managed to lose weight, only to find that it gradually comes back.
After doing this for years, it can be incredibly frustrating and can leave you wondering what else you can try.
Weight management isn’t the same for everyone, and for some people, bariatric surgery may be an option worth exploring as part of a longer-term approach to their health.
“ What will people think? ”
For some people, this can be one of the hardest parts.
You might worry about telling your family or friends. You may be concerned that people won’t understand why you’re considering surgery or might judge your decision.
But ultimately, this is about your health and your life.
For many of our patients, the decision to have bariatric surgery is about much more than weight loss. It’s about having more energy, feeling healthier, moving more comfortably and being able to enjoy everyday things that may have become difficult.
Everyone has their own reasons for considering surgery, and what matters is finding the right decision for you.
“ Do I have to be on a waiting list in Ireland? ”
No.
You don’t need to be on an HSE waiting list to explore the option of having bariatric surgery in Spain through the EU Cross Border Directive.
For many people, finding out that there is another route available is a real eye-opener.
If you’ve been thinking about surgery but don’t know where to start, we can explain how the process works and help you understand whether you may be eligible.
There are certain criteria that need to be met, but you don’t have to work it all out yourself.
From your first conversation with us, we’ll answer your questions, explain the process and help you understand what the next steps could look like.
“ What if I’m nervous about travelling for surgery? ”
That’s completely understandable.
Having surgery is a big decision, and doing it in another country can understandably feel daunting at first.
That’s why we don’t expect you to simply book a flight and figure everything out yourself.
Before you travel to Spain, you’ll have a free video meeting with your surgeon. It gives you the chance to talk through your situation, ask any questions you may have and discuss the procedure with the person who will be carrying out your surgery.
It’s also an opportunity to get to know your surgeon before you travel, which can make a big difference when you’re feeling nervous about having treatment abroad.
Our team will also help with the practical side of your journey, including travel arrangements and the paperwork involved.
Once you arrive in Spain, you’ll have your pre-surgery appointments and the necessary checks before your procedure, followed by post-operative care before you return home.
Knowing what is going to happen and having someone there to support you can make the whole experience feel much less daunting.
“ What if I’m still not sure? ”
That’s absolutely fine.
Making an enquiry doesn’t mean you have to have surgery.
Sometimes you just need someone to explain the options properly, answer the questions you’ve been sitting on and give you a better idea of what’s involved.
Bariatric surgery won’t be the right choice for everyone, but if it’s something you’ve been thinking about for a while, it could be worth finding out a little more.
You don’t have to wait until January, start another diet or make a big decision today.
Sometimes the first step is simply asking the question.
At Surgery Now, we’re here to have that conversation with you, with no pressure and no judgement, just honest information and support to help you decide what feels right for you.
