Reaching Out in Desperation
I wanted to write today about my journey with Surgery Now. We reached out to Surgery Now in January 2022 after my partner searched the internet in desperation to see if there was help out there. I had been 3 years on a waiting list at this time and was told it would be another 2 years before I would be seen by a neurologist. At this stage, I was in daily chronic pain in my lower back and left leg with no light at the end of the tunnel.
Swift Action and Unparalleled Care
Two weeks after initial contact with Surgery Now, I was on a flight to Spain. The care and treatment I received in Spain was second to none. From being collected at the airport, being set up in an apartment at a very affordable rate, to being brought to and from appointments—the service was incredible.
I arrived on a Sunday, met a neurologist on the following day, and was operated on that Friday. Incredible how quickly everything was done. I spent 5 days recovering in the most amazing hospital, where Surgery Now checked in on me daily. My partner was given an adjoining room to herself for the duration of my hospital stay.
Ongoing Support and Recovery
I remained in Spain for a further 2 weeks for recovery purposes and was collected every second day to be brought for bandage changes. Leanne, an absolute star, looked after all the paperwork with regards to my reimbursement from the HSE when I got home.
Once home, I began on the road to recovery. I knew I would never be as good as I once was, but I could now walk upright with the aid of a walking stick, rather than bent over with 2 walking sticks. The chronic pain was now not as severe as it had been, and my medication was reduced.
Continued Care and Follow-Up
I reached out to Leanne 4 months after my return and asked if a 6-month review with the surgeon was possible, just to make sure all was as it should be and that the spacers placed in my lower back remained in place. This was done for me without hesitation, and again a hotel room was booked for me, once again at a very affordable rate. I was brought to and from my appointment, where I underwent tests and X-rays and was pleased to hear all is as it should be.
Since then, I have stayed in contact with Leanne and the team, letting them know how I’m progressing. I sent them pics of my first short walk outdoors.
Building Lasting Relationships
I have been back to Spain this year for a reunion with fellow patients I met during my time of surgery. Through Surgery Now, I have met and remain in contact with the best of people, and we have set up a WhatsApp group with patients I met out there.
I have been able to go on holidays again with the aid of special assistance at the airport—something I thought I might never do again—and I bore poor Leanne with many pics of my travels with my wonderful partner. I have recently completed a walk for charity, again something I thought would never be possible.
Embracing a New Lease on Life
There are many things I will never do again, things I loved such as running, going to the gym, golf among others. But thanks to Surgery Now, I no longer dwell and think of all I can’t do, but rather be thankful and embrace the little things I now can do.
I will never be able to thank these people for all they have done and continue to do. The genuine care they take of you is incredible, and as I discovered, it doesn’t end when you leave Spain for home—it is ongoing. My partner and I owe them so much.
